  • The Hanged Man - Novel

    (On Topic: | DVD | Episode Guide | Novel | Soundtrack | Index )

A novelization of the series The Hanged Man was relased, written by creator Edmund Ward. The cover states it was dramatized for the tv series, though if the first edition says this then it might have been produced during or after the scripts were written. The book is quite an entertaining read. The mix of tense violence and humourous anecdotes got me so hooked I stayed up late a couple of nights reading it.

The copyright for this edition is 1976. It was published by Weidenfeld and Nicolson, London. It has 40 numbered chapters and 276 pages and its original selling price was 3.95gbp.

Hanged Man PaperbackThere was also a mass market paperback edition produced by Futura Publications, London, in 1977 (ISBN 0-8600-7495-1). It has the same 40 chapters and 276 pages. Original selling price was 90p.

A search of any of the large secondhand book sites such as BookFinder.com should find you a copy of either edition. I got my copy of the paperback from them via Alibris and it arrived without any problems. Mind you, the cost of postage to New Zealand plus the exchange rate meant I paid a ridiculous price for it.

Here's some examples of the wisdom of Turtle included in this book:

Turtle's problem was the size of a van load of furs diverted by himself and Eddie.

I broke the rules. Never nick anything you can't carry. They teach you better at borstal.
God save the Queen' is all right, but used fivers are louder.
Not like the old days, Mr. Crowe. All this organized crime. Now there's more organization than crime.
Clean as my old grandma's woolly bodice. Except when she was wearing it in Holloway. Dirty place, the nick.
