By James Mitchell.

The dinner party was a reunion for the successful ones: Laidlaw, the host, galloping towards his first million; Moulton, the physicist, brilliant and tormented; Arnott, the doctor, highly thought-of, married to a beauty; Fitzgerald, the painter, wary still of a success that might become monotonous... Four men who had attended the same provincial grammar school; four men who had made it. Also present was the voluptuous and ruthless Madge Innes, who had grown up with them and knew them all intimately.....

Throughout this superbly entertaining novel a brilliant light illuminates the life-and the weaknesses of each of Laidlaw's guests. First one and then another is held up for scrutiny, and the childhood of each is described, when all of them, though drawn from very different backgrounds, studied and played and fought together. This is a tremendously impressive, brilliantly sustained drama in which the future of each of this small band of dutinguished people is put at risk....
